The T2 Domestic terminal is undergoing a $200 million redevelopment — the first major upgrade in over 30 years at Australia’s busiest terminal.
These improvements will deliver a smoother, faster experience for travellers, with new security and check-in areas designed to get passengers from kerb to gate in 15 minutes. The upgrade will also ensure we meet the Federal Government’s requirement to enhance security screening by 31 December 2025.
During the works, some airline departures will temporarily change:
While the redevelopment is underway, the airport journey may look a little different. Additional staff will be on hand to assist and guide passengers.
To ensure a smooth trip, we recommend arriving at least one hour before departure if travelling with hand luggage and two hours before departure if checking in bags. Where possible, check in online to save time.
Thank you for your patience as we create a better travel experience for all passengers.
This is the first major upgrade in more than 30 years at Australia’s busiest terminal, with more than 17 million passengers a year using T2 – nearly double the capacity of Western Sydney Airport.
Once complete, passengers will have an easier and faster journey through the terminal– taking 15 minutes to get from the kerb to the gate. The improvements will also ensure Sydney Airport complies with the Federal Government’s mandate to upgrade security screening by 31 December 2025.
New self-service check-in kiosks and advanced bag drop systems will increase baggage processing rates by 300 bags per hour.
Next-generation security technology and state-of-the-art scanners will allow you to leave laptops and aerosols in your hand luggage and almost double the capacity of each security lane from 235 to 500 passengers an hour.
The upgrade of T2 will be completed by the end of 2026.
Virgin Australia and Jetstar will continue to operate from T2. Rex and FlyPelican will move their departures to T3, while their arrivals will remain in T2. Qantas will continue to operate from T3.
The transformation of T2 means that space in the departures check-in hall will be limited. Rex and FlyPelican will move Departures to T3 temporarily to reduce some of the passenger volume in T2 during construction.
Passengers should leave plenty of time to get to the airport. Arrive one hour before domestic flights with hand luggage and two hours if checking in bags. To save extra time, please check in online before you arrive.
Passengers departing or arriving from T2 or T3 will still use the same car parks they are currently using. For more information on parking, click here.
Yes. T2 will have enough space and capacity to process passengers during peak periods. Throughout construction, the same number of check-in counters will be available that each airline has access to today.
Major construction will start from 1 May 2025.
